SAGUNTO AND SAINT JOSEPH'S CAVES

The purpose of our private Guided Tour Sagunto and Saint Joseph’s Caves is to bring you to the two very interesting places located very close to the cities of Valencia and Castellon. Meanwhile Sagunto is the place full of History, Saint Joseph’s Caves is very beautiful and rare natural landscape.

Sagunto is one of the most visited towns in the province of Valencia. It is well known by the History because of its heroic and tragic resistance to Hannibal’s forces in 219 B.C. This resistance lasted 8 months and in the end, the citizens set fire to the city and all died. We will guide you through the Judería (the Jewish Quarter) which has narrow alleyways with whitewashed houses and lancet arches that connect streets and form an interesting labyrinth for strolling round and imaging the days of old times. There is a small museum here where we can see a small portion of Diana Temple wall built by Romans more than 2000 years ago.

Then we will visit the Roman Theater, declared National Monument in 1986, which is one of the most important Roman legacies in Spain. Let discover the ruins of the Fortress of Sagunto that extends over several kilometers on the top of the steep hill. Once we entered the Fortress it is easy to feel the history of several civilizations, which have inhabited it: Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Christians. Also we are going to visit small, but very interesting Archeological Museum, where you can see some Roman coins, amphoras and mosaics, Iberian sculptures and reproductions of Sagunto of different historical periods. Close to the Roman Theater there is a small shop of traditional local ceramic where you can buy some local handcrafted souvenirs.

After visiting Sagunto, we will continue our tour going deep into the Saint Joseph’s Caves with its unique subterranean river located close to the Vall d´Uixó small village lost in the mountains, but still close to the Mediterranean coast. Saint Joseph’s Caves are a natural grottoes of astonishing beauty, where we will guide you to the grotto’s entrance, where is still possible to see some cave paintings which are about 15,000 years old. After that we will navigate in small rowing boat officially the longest navigable subterranean river in Europe.

Enjoying the peaceful boat ride we will contemplate fanciful forms of the rocks that the action of the water was molding during thousands of years. Dozens of stalactites and stalagmites of different shapes are creating this beautiful natural subterranean landscape. Let enjoy together this peaceful and silent subterranean river boat riding. We are going to pass by boat several grottoes of different shapes and sizes. Some of them are very small and narrow, some others are big enough, but one is called “Cathedral” because its vault is more than 10 meters high. Let also walk few hundred meters of the dry cave enjoying so called “crocodile lake”, “demon’s head” and some other incredible spots.

In some moment of our Guided Tour Sagunto and Saint Joseph’s Caves we can enjoy the lunch in one of the local restaurants where you can choose and taste traditional dishes and wines of the local Valencian cuisine. We can do the lunch either in Sagunto or in Saint Joseph’s Caves.
