Valencian wine region with Denomination of Origin (DO) Utiel – Requena is located about 70 km from the city of Valencia (1 hour driving) and is considered one of the most important Spanish wine regions. Local red wines produced with the native Bobal variety grape stand out above all. This variety provides to the local red wines very specific complex and unique character. The Requena part of the wine region is remarkable for having its own production of Cava (Spanish sparkling wine) of great flavor and quality internationally recognized at the highest level.

We will start our private Wine tour Valencia – Requena wine and history visiting one of the local wine cellars where we will learn about the process and ancient traditions of making wine and cava. In the end of the visit we will taste the best local cavas, wines and optionally some snacks.

After visiting the wine cellar we will drive to the old part of Requena village (15 minutes), the so-called Barrio de la Villa. Requena has very rich and interesting millennial history. The city was founded by Iberians in VII Century BC, conquered later by Romans, then by Visigoths, later inhabited by Muslims and finally reconquered by the Christians in XIII Century. During our walk through the old part of the town we will see remains of the ancient Islamic and medieval walls that once protected the city, the churches of Saint Mary, Christ the Savior and Saint Nicholas. Walking by the narrow and serpentine streets and small squares it’s easy to feel the atmosphere of the past centuries.

In the Villa of Requena we can optionally visit inside:

• Subterranean Caves – an authentic underground city that use to have very different usages throughout the history of the city of Requena.
• The Silk Museum – several centuries-old building with a magnificent and interesting exhibition of the products and utensils related to the silk production and the small shop of local products.

Transfer from the wine cellar to Requena village = 15 minutes. Visiting the village of Requena = 1 hour 15 minutes. Transfer back to Valencia = 1 hour. Total time = 6 hours.
• 8 hours tour (with lunch): Transfer from Valencia to the wine cellar = 1 hour. Visiting the cellar and wine tasting = 2 hours and the half. Transfer from the wine cellar to Requena village = 15 minutes. Visiting the village of Requena = 1 hour 15 minutes. Lunch = 2 hours. Transfer back to Valencia = 1 hour. Total time = 8 hours.

Note: the order of the monuments to visit depends on several factors as: the meeting point, your personal interest or choice, opening hours, celebration of special event, day of the week, etc.
